Jesus said "I am the light of the world: he that followeth
Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:12 |
There are some
things that are essential for life, Water, Light and Oxygen are among the most
important of the list. Last week we talked about the water and how it becomes
an Oasis for us when we are going thru the desert.
We know of course
the Living Water of the Word is the most powerful Oasis we can experience, an
Oasis of Love. This week I want to talk about Light!
When Leon was in
the hospital in early July, and had been moved to a private room from ICU, he
noticed that everyone who passed by his door would look into the room and began
to wonder why people would be so curious. When he was able to get up and walk
the quadrant of the floor he was on, he noticed that he did the same thing.
Thinking it was because he was right handed and the rooms were on the right, he
decided to go the other way and see what happened. Sure enough his eyes turned
toward the left.
Just what was it
that was so interesting that your eyes are immediately pulled to one side or the
other? Finally the light "dawned" upon him; there were windows in each of the
rooms and none in the hall. We
automatically look for light when we are in a sunless situation.
Think about the
power of the sunshine. Remember when you used to hang your wash on the line.
There is no sweeter smell than that of sheets that are line-dried. The sun is a
purifier. Even the air cleaning machine uses Ozone to cleanse the air. Many
people think ozone is dangerous because the weatherman may say, "Stay in today
because the ozone level is very high."
It is not the ozone that is dangerous,
but the pollution in the air that is causing the sun to produce more ozone to
take care of it. Pollution can not be measured, but ozone can. It is God’s
answer to cleaning the pollution!
It has been
amazing to watch the Plasma Exchange (Plasmapherisis, if you want to get
technical) cleanse Leon’s blood of the antibodies or pollution that had built up
in his blood. It was causing his immune system to block an important chemical
from being produced that is needed to transmit impulses from his brain to the
muscle. The modern miracles of the medical world!
In our scripture
today, Jesus talks about light and the importance of His Light shining in the
world. He says “I am the Light of the World; he that followeth Me shall not
walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
The Living Water and Light of Life
Think about those
promises. If we drink the Living Water and follow Jesus we shall never thirst
again and will never have to walk in darkness.
So why is it that
we sometimes feel that the weight of the world is on our shoulders and nobody
knows the trouble we’ve seen? It may be we are too caught up in the world
and not basking in the “Son.” We know what our promises are, but do we
exercise on the premises?
I like the email
Toni sent to me yesterday as I was working on this message, so I thought I would
share it with you.
Can You Sleep When the Wind Blows?
Years ago, a
farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He constantly advertised for
hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic.
They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on
the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he
received a steady stream of refusals.
Finally, a short,
thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farm
hand?" the farmer asked him. "Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered
the little man.
Although puzzled
by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked
well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with
the man's work.
Then one night the
wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a
lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the
little man and yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before
they blow away!"
The little man
rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No sir. I told you, I can sleep when
the wind blows."
Enraged by the
response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he
hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that
all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in
the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred.
The shutters were
tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The
farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to
also sleep while the wind blew.
When you're
prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you have nothing to fear.
Can you sleep when the wind blows through your life? The hired hand in the
story was able to sleep because he had secured the farm against the storm.
We secure ourselves against the storms of life by grounding
ourselves in the Word of God. We don't need to understand, we just need to hold
His hand to have peace in the middle of storms.
Let us take time to be drawn to the light and bask in the Son, so
when the winds blow we will be able to sleep.
