"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.   Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

--Jesus Christ, Matthew 5:10-12

The Courage to Carry On
When He (the Lamb) opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.  They called out in a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?"

Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.  I watched as He opened the sixth seal.  There was a great earthquake.  The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.

The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.  Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.  They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!  For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"  Revelation 6:9-17

A couple of definitions may be helpful:

Martyr:  A person who chooses to suffer or die rather than give up his faith or his principles; person tortured or killed because of his beliefs.

Courage:  The attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful, instead of withdrawing from it; quality of being fearless or brave; valor.

TOM RUSK has written some helpful ideas in Get Out of Your Own Way! published by Hay House, Inc.

Like beauty, courage is only in the eyes of the beholder.  Courage is the act of doing what one feels is right despite one’s fears.  The greater the fear, the greater the courage necessary to overcome it and do the right thing.  Where there is no fear, there can be no courage.

…You’ll never hear a hero boast of feeling a surge of courage.  I have seen many frightened people wait for courage to arrive while they waste precious time suffering pain and loss of self-respect.  They await the abatement of their fear and the onset of courage … they wait forever. The feeling of courage will never come because it doesn’t exist.  You are only courageous when you do what you feel is right despite your fear.  Everyone feels fear, so everyone can be courageous.  What can help you to act courageously?  Inspiration by the actions of others in similar situations and desperation about your own situation can be tremendously helpful!

When you try new things you may be frightened.  But afterwards you will feel a surge of self-respect and you will have gained competence and confidence. You will also have taken a step towards self-acceptance and the elimination of self-doubt.

Let’s face it … serving God takes courage!  Jesus, in Matthew 5:10-12, states, "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.   Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Is this the kind of blessing we want to sign up for?  I hope so!  But it has a cost, as illustrated by the traditions concerning the deaths of the apostles Jesus appointed to begin the ministry.  Tradition tells us that they were all martyrs except John, and he was boiled in oil!

When John saw the vision of the 5th seal being opened it really affected him.  He saw the souls of the martyrs under the altar.  They were at the foot of the altar in heaven, at the feet of Christ!  They may have died to this life, but they still are alive.  Persecutors can only kill our body, but beyond that, we are safe from them.  God provides a beautiful eternity for those who are faithful unto death.  Being a martyr does not save us.  Jesus paid that cost! But many have had -- and will have -- to lay down their lives for the cause of Christ.

If you or I were God we would probably just zap our enemies and make this world be a Utopia.  But God has chosen not to do that.  However, the Lord will comfort His servants during their trials.  When and if you or I are required to lay down our lives, God will provide the strength we need.

When the 6th seal was opened as described in Revelation 6, there was a great earthquake. The foundations of the world are shaken.  These are bold figurative descriptions of great changes that symbolically declare the end of the world and the Day of Judgment!  Dread and terror will seize on all everyone!  No matter how important, rich, brave or strong a person is, it will not save them from the terror of God’s judgment!  The high and mighty wants to hide from God!

Christ is a gentle Lamb, but He can be angry, and this shows the wrath of the Lamb, which is a thing to be feared!  Consider this:  when our Redeemer who Himself appeased the wrath of God, becomes our enemy, where will we find a friend to plead for us?  Each person has a day of opportunity and a season of grace.  But if we ignore it, then we will have to face God on His day of righteous wrath.

Idolaters are described as hiding themselves in their dens and secret caves, trying to find a way to escape destruction.  Christians are to boldly confess the message of Christ and His salvation.  And this declaration will cause satanic wrath to be outpoured upon us!  We may have to endure the contempt of others.  But this will be for a short season.  The shame and punishment in hell is everlasting!

When the bishop of Madras was touring India, he was introduced to a young slave girl who was an outstanding witness for the Lord.  By her quiet persistence in telling others of Jesus and His love, she had won many to Christ.  As the bishop looked at her, he saw that her face, neck, and arms were badly scarred.  She had received many beatings for her faithful testimony.  With tears in his eyes he asked, "Child, how could you bear this brutality?" Somewhat surprised, she replied, "Aren't you glad if you can suffer for Christ, sir?"  Her humble response spoke to his heart.  It reminded him that if one is true to the Savior, he should expect ridicule and even harsh treatment from the world.

Clarence Jordan, author of the Cotton Patch New Testament translation was getting a red-carpet tour of another minister's church. With pride the minister pointed to the rich, imported pews and luxurious decorations.

As they stepped outside, darkness was falling, and a spotlight shone on a huge cross atop the steeple.

"That cross alone cost us ten thousand dollars," the minister said with a satisfied smile.

"You got cheated," said Jordan. "Times were when Christians could get them for free."

As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain. For He says, "In the time of My favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you."  I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:1-2

God calling to us today. Deep down we probably already know what he wants from you, as illustrated in the following story from Sunday Sermons.

A little girl was watching TV in her bedroom when her mother called out, "Michelle, come to dinner!" There was no response.

A short time later her mother again called out, "Michelle, come to dinner!" Again, there was no response.

Finally the mother literally shouted, "Michelle, come to dinner!"

Whereupon the little girl came out of her room, ran to the kitchen, and with an innocent look on her face said, "Sorry, Mom, I didn’t hear you when you called me the first two times."

Jesus is tenderly calling you "home."  Are you listening?

Softly And Tenderly

Come home, come home.
Ye who are weary, come home.
Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling, "O sinner, come home!"

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling for you and for me.
See, on the portals, He's waiting and watching,
Watching for you and for me.

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?

Time is now fleeting; the moments are passing,
Passing from you and from me.
Shadows are gathering; death's night is coming,
Coming for you and for me.

Oh for the wonderful love He has promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.
